Garland is named for Augustus Hill Garland, a U.S. Attorney General from Arkansas, oddly enough, and the city's growth exploded specifically after Dallas-based defense manufacturer Chance Vought (later LTV) relocated its aircraft plant here in the 1940s and 50s, drawing the wave of post-war workforce housing that still defines much of Garland's older housing stock today. A devastating EF4 tornado tore through northern Garland in December 2015, leveling homes along a documented path that's now, a decade later, a mix of rebuilt post-2015 construction next to homes that survived — two visibly different foundation and grading eras within the same neighborhoods. The East Fork of the Trinity River runs along Garland's eastern edge, adding flood-adjacent drainage considerations distinct from the interior of the city.
