Rockwall takes its name from a genuine geological oddity: a buried, wall-like rock formation, still not fully explained by geologists, that early settlers kept striking when they dug wells in the 1850s — visible sections are preserved downtown at Historic Rock Wall Park. That same subsurface formation complicates drainage design in parts of the older city core in a way most flat Blackland Prairie towns don't deal with, since a trench can hit dense rock at a shallower depth than the clay alone would suggest. Away from the formation, the rest of Rockwall County sits on standard black gumbo clay, and the city's explosive growth as a Dallas-area suburb since the 1990s, much of it wrapped around Lake Ray Hubbard's northern shore, has built extensively on that clay with grading quality that varies by decade of construction.
