Murphy sits in Collin County in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, a small, largely built-out city surrounded by Plano, Sachse, and Wylie, on the same highly expansive Blackland Prairie black gumbo clay found throughout Collin County. Murphy's growth as a bedroom community accelerated sharply from the 1990s onward, so most of its housing sits on newer subdivision grading, generally consistent given the city's compact, concentrated development pattern. North Texas's intense spring thunderstorm season tests that clay regardless of construction quality, and because Murphy is fully surrounded by denser development on all sides, runoff patterns here are shaped as much by neighboring cities' grading and drainage infrastructure as by Murphy's own lot-level conditions. Murphy incorporated later than most of its Collin County neighbors, in 1957, specifically to avoid being annexed by the faster-growing cities around it, and that defensive incorporation history is part of why Murphy has stayed one of the smallest, most purely residential cities in the county even as Plano, Sachse, and Wylie grew up around its borders on all sides. Maxwell Creek runs through the western part of town on its way toward Lake Lavon, and because Murphy's footprint is so constrained by its larger neighbors, the city has had comparatively little room to build the kind of large detention ponds and engineered drainage infrastructure that bigger, more recently developed Collin County suburbs were able to design in from the start.
